If you're a military history buff, you're in luck. Due to Gulf Shores' proximity to Mobile Bay, visitors can explore several historical forts that are located near the water. Most of these Alabama forts were built during the 1700s and 1800s, and they have played a part in several major wars throughout U.S. history.

Dauphin Island, located just outside of Mobile Bay, is a short drive from Gulf Shores with views of the water and a ferry ride included. Dauphin Island is home to two famous forts, Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines. Fort Morgan has been called the "finest example of military architecture in the New World" and was originally constructed as Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812. Fort Gaines was built in 1821 and was used during the famous Battle of Mobile Bay of the Civil War. Dauphine Island has seen many battles, and was also used as a location for U.S. military training during WWI and WWII.

In Mobile, Alabama the famous historic Fort Conde awaits your exploration. Originally constructed by the French in the 1720s, this fort guarded and protected citizens of Mobile for over 100 years. Also visit the picturesque Fort Conde Village neighborhood constructed near the fort in the 1820s. Another noteworthy fort located about an hour and a half into Alabama's interior near the town of Tensaw is Fort Mims. This fort was used during the civil war of the Creek Indian Nation and is the site of the Fort Mims Massacre.
